Serving It Right

Overview

Serving It Right is a required certification for anyone who serves or sells alcohol in British Columbia. The course covers legal obligations, responsible service principles, and proven strategies to reduce alcohol related risks, helping promote safer workplaces and communities.

Participants develop practical skills to confidently manage intoxicated patrons, verify identification, and refuse service when necessary. This certification is an essential requirement for hospitality, event, and liquor service roles across the province.

Course content: 

  • Identifying signs of alcohol intoxication
  • Understanding legal responsibilities and liability
  • Preventing over‑consumption, impaired driving, and alcohol‑related violence
  • Ensuring alcohol is not sold or served to minors
  • Upholding duty of care both on and off licensed premises
  • Developing and enforcing responsible beverage service policies

Change, Refund, and Return Policy: 

  • Learners may request one-time course rescheduling or transfer to another available session. The request must be made at least three (3) business days prior to course start date. Transfers are subject to seat availability.
  • Full refunds will be provided if the request to cancel has been received more than a week (7 days) before the course start date or Western Workforce Skills Training Centre cancels or reschedules the course.
  • No refund will be issued if a registered participant is late, absent, or cancelled within the day.

A: Bartenders, servers, managers, event staff, and anyone involved in alcohol service must hold a valid certificate.

A: Yes. Serving It Right is the provincially recognized standard for responsible alcohol service in BC.

A: To earn your Serving It Right certificate, you must successfully complete a multiple-choice exam with 35 randomly generated questions. A minimum score of 80% (28 correct answers) is required, and each purchased exam includes up to three attempts.

A: Individuals who are licensees, managers, or employed in retail liquor stores must still obtain Serving It Right certification. Servers moving to British Columbia from other provinces with valid, current certification may be exempt from the SIR training requirement. However, because alcohol service regulations vary across provinces, employers in BC may still request Serving It Right certification as a best practice (Responsible Service BC)
